October 22, 2013 Frac Sand Legislative Alert
Recently I wrote you about Sen. Tiffany’s bill that prohibits local control of frac sand mining. This bill is moving too quickly and many of you wrote me to say you wanted to testify against the bill at the public hearing. I am writing to tell you what I know at this point.
The bill has been numbered as Senate Bill 349.
A public hearing is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Thursday, October 24th in room 411 South of the Capitol.
I urge you to attend the hearing if at all possible. If you can't, make sure to call or write your elected officials.
Tips for effective grass roots advocacy:
Oral testimony may be time limited. Try to be concise and avoid repeating previous speakers. Highlight something about the bill where you have unique knowledge or experience.
Prepare written testimony. Make copies to distribute to committee members and the press when you're called to testify. Use written testimony to provide detail, but don't read from it word for word during your testimony.
Make sure to fill out a slip to register in opposition to the bill, even if you don't plan on speaking.
Make sure to visit your Assembly Representative and State Senator before or after your testimony. Talk with them or their staff about why you're opposed to the bill. Leave a copy of your written testimony and ask for a written response.
Feel free to stop by my office (22 South) for anything you need- whether that is to store a coat or to ask a question about the bill- I'm here at your service.
