With Apologies to the People of the Madison Area Mining Action group and all of the concerned activists of Ashland and Iron counties, the Ojibwe nation and other concerned persons across this and other states!
Just because this blog has been silent does NOT mean that there has been no activity!
The MAMA group has just concluded a camp to train people in non-violent civil disobedience (listen to interview with WPR at http://news.wpr.org/post/group-prepares-fight-mine-civil-disobedience ) Pre camp coverage was shown on Channel 3, Madison's CBS affiliate: http://www.channel3000.com/news/activists-set-up-training-for-mine-protest/-/1648/20160756/-/s04vs/-/index.html. This group has also started a camp in the Penokee Hills where the mining company plans to begin exploratory drilling (http://www.indiancountrynews.com/).
I would also recommend that those interested read an article in the Wisconsin Citizens Media Cooperative with associated video links to a meeting of the Iron County board public Q and A session with Gogebic Taconite (GTac) personnel concerning the four-phase, 22 mile long open pit taconite mine they plan to develop in Iron and Ashland Counties. These videos are a fascinating insight into the way that mining companies (both metallic and non-metallic) deal with governmental bodies and with citizens. In addition MAMA keeps us informed of activities in other states where similarly deluded legislators are prepared to attack both state AND FEDERAL laws protecting our environment! Subsequent blog post will refer to this topic!!!!
