REVIEW OF WISCONSIN GRASSROOTS CONFERENCE
SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2012
Yesterday 55 grassroot Leaders from more than 30 community groups around the state convened at a planning and social meeting in Stevens Point, WI. We heard from leaders of various Grassroot Groups about their Successes and where they wish to improve. We set up action priorities, developed by 6 breakout groups, voted on the actions, and created committees to meet via email, in person, and on conference calls to continue to push these goals into real action initiatives to tackle the concerns we share at this moment and for the long term.
Once we formed our action groups, set next interest group meeting dates, it was time to walk a few steps to the River Walk Restaurant where we lunched and heard grassroots ideas from Kathleen Vinehout whose success in getting elected to her state Senate seat twice depended on a full-blown grassroots campaign. Kathleen offered to be our grassroots voice in the State Senate! She said: Put me on speed-dial-- I will not only hear you, make useful suggestions to you, but push your ideas and issues forward in the State Senate with my colleagues! Now that is Democracy at its best! Kathleen will help us transform the way the state Dems, the county Dems, and the Senate hear our opinions, understand our issues, and will work with us to promote the good values we know we need to preserve in Wisconsin!
We agreed to meet regionally, in small grassroots group clusters as well as have subsequent broad Grassroot Group meeting in September. We will hold trainings across the state for groups wishing to learn more about the skills and actions they can take to promote progressive politics in their areas.
A great deal accomplished in a few hours! We are energized, encouraged and have a vision of how to move forward! Yes We Can!!
