The U.S. State Department is expected to issue its draft National Interest Determination (NID) in 2014 on whether the President should approve the Keystone XL Pipeline. In the event the State Department recommends approval, more than 100 civil disobedience actions will be triggered across the country. The goal of these actions is to show the President the American people don't want this pipeline, and to convince him to deny the permit. Locally, we are holding a training session for anyone wishing to participate in the peaceful civil disobedience action in Madison. Attendance at this training is required for anyone wishing to risk arrest during the civil disobedience action, but is also for those who want to help but cannot risk arrest.

WHY: Whether to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline is ultimately President Obama's decision. In 2011 Obama was expected to green-light the project, but he postponed his decision after more than 1,000 people were arrested at the White House for engaging in peaceful civil disobedience against the Keystone XL. If the State Department recommends approval of the pipeline, this will trigger numerous acts of peaceful civil disobedience across the country. In these actions, regular people will stand up, peacefully but firmly, to tell Obama to not approve the Keystone XL.
About Us: We are a group of local people planning a civil disobedience action in Madison, WI as part of the national Pledge of Resistance to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline. This action will be one of many held across the country if the State Department recommends approval of the project. The Pledge of Resistance is organized by NoKXL.org, a coalition led by Credo Mobile, Rainforest Action Network and The Other 98%. For more information on the national movement, visit www.nokxl.org.
