The Duluth Superior Film Festival

For the part of the state more concerned with metallic mining, this film provides a chance to see what western Winsconsin, southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa are facing as large open pit sand mines devour their hills and spread dangerous silica dust into their homes and fields. Jim Tittle is an effective advocate for a moratorium on all mining for the type of silica sand used to fracture the rock that traps oil (in Colorado and North Dakota, among other places) and natural gas (in New York and Pennsylvania and others).
